I recently saw a Dateline telecast about illegal immigrants and a boatload of Chinese who arrived in New York. Many were detained in prison for over four years. When they were finally released, guess what they sang -- Amazing Grace -- in Chinese. As I listened to it, I realized how appropriate that song was for them, because Amazing Grace is written on a five tone or pentatonic scale. You can play the melody on a piano using only the black keys. Oriental music is traditionally built on the five tone scale. I haven’t looked into it, but Amazing Grace may be our only hymn built on a musical scale familiar to them. The tune is reportedly an old American southern melody.

When John Newton wrote the words for Amazing Grace, I’m quite sure he never envisioned that a group of imprisoned Chinese would one day sing it as their song of liberation. He did, however, find an apt way to describe the Grace of God -- Amazing Grace! I am astonished that even the non-Christian world has taken this song to heart. You hear it everywhere, but I’m sure that many who sing it don’t grasp the meaning of what they are saying when they utter, “Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!” Those are words that only a redeemed child of God can sing, and we should sing it with unabashed enthusiasm because of the truth it conveys.

II Timothy 4:5 says for us to stand steady. Don't be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Bring others to Christ. Leave nothing undone that you ought to do. Today is the workday for Jesus. Now is the time when we must serve the Lord. We are living in a time when soon and very soon Jesus Christ is coming back for His church and He is going to take His church to be where He is. This is work time for the saints of God, those redeemed by the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul was coming to the end of his life. Soon he was going to face the ax, he was going to have his head taken off his body, but the apostle Paul was quick to say, "Stand steady for the Lord." Jesus is coming soon!

II Timothy 4:8 says, In Heaven a crown is waiting for me which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that great day of His return, and not just to me, but to all those whose lives show they are eagerly looking forward to His coming back again. Now God's Word is plain in telling us that Jesus Christ is coming again. This is no fairy tale. This is no myth. This is the truth of God. The angels said that as Jesus went into heaven, so he would come back in like manner. Jesus is coming back and as you and I are faithful to him, as we know him as our savior, as we are right with almighty God through the work of Jesus Christ, Heaven is our home. Today ask Jesus Christ to save you. Romans 10:9-10. "...if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED. For with the heart a person believes (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Christ) and so is justified (declared righteous, acceptable to God), and with the mouth he confesses (declares openly and speaks out freely his faith) and confirms [his] salvation. Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!!
